Progress appears to being made on negotiations to extend the federal debt limit and avoiding a default.

According to the Associated Press, President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy are nearing agreement on a two-year budget deal.

One obstacle to an agreement is Republican demands that people receiving government assistance in the form of food stamps, cash help and other benefits meet “tougher work requirements.”

The deadline is June 1, after which Uncle Sam could no longer pay its bills, which could trigger a worldwide economic crisis.
