A crucial legal test of gay rights may have started on a fabrication.
The Associated Press is reporting that the plaintiff, Lorie Smith, whose lawsuit prompted the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that freedom of religion protected a person from prosecution under a Colorado law prohibiting discrimination against same-sex couples may have made up key elements of her case.
Smith claimed that a customer named “Stewart” had asked for her to create a wedding website that included support for same-sex marriage.
But “Stewart” has told reporters that he didn’t make such a request and that he’s been married to a woman for 15 years. The group that brought the lawsuit denied any fabrication.
Legal experts interviewed said the revelation was unlikely to change the court’s ruling.
“Affirmative action” for whites challenged
For years, some colleges and universities had a “legacy” policy for admissions, giving preferential status to relatives of alumni, as well as those who had donated money to the institution.
Such policies have been called “affirmative action” for white or rich students. On Monday a group is asking the federal Department of Education to review them arguing they discriminate against minorities and the unwealthy, according to The New York Times.
That request comes right after the Supreme Court struck down the use of race as a factor in college admissions, potentially shifting the affirmative action issue to one of class, rather than strictly race.

Angels lose and Dodgers win
The Los Angeles Angels suffered their fifth loss in six games on Monday, falling 10-3 to the San Diego Padres in Anaheim.
The Halos (45-42) had 14 hits but not enough runs in the loss. What might be worse is is that Mike Trout left the game with a left wrist injury. The Angels remain in third place in the American League West, six games out of first and three games back in the AL wild car chase.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (47-37) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2. Max Muncy hit his 19th homer of the season. The Blue Crew remains in second place in the National League West, 2.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks and leading the NL wild card race by 1.5 games.
