Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani continued to polish his Hall of Fame credentials on Thursday as the team swept a double-header from the Detroit Tigers in the Motor City, improving their chances of grabbing a wild card playoff spot.
Ohtani pitched a shutout in the first game, then hit two home runs in the second.
Shohei (9-5) pitched nine scoreless innings while striking out eight batters. He yielded just one hit in the 6-0 Halo victory and walked three batters.
Taylor Ward hit two home runs – his 13th and 14th – and drove in three runs.
In the second game, its was Ohtani with the heavy bat, hitting his 37th and 38th home runs in the 11-4 victory. Eduardo Escobar and Hunter Renfroe each added homers of their own.
The Angels are now 53-49 and remain in third place in the American League West and just three games out of qualifying for a wild card slot.
On Friday the Angels can gain more ground when they play the Blue Jays in Toronto.
