Stars are nice; winning is better

Right now, the key body part is not the torn ligament in Shohei Ohtani’s pitching arm, but the finger pointing the blame for what’s likely the last chapter of his career in a Los Angeles Angels uniform.

As everyone who follows big league baseball knows, the Halos’ two-way superstar has a season-ending pitching injury, and he may eventually be setting aside his bat, too, after 44 home runs for a team that was nowhere near to his standards.

But, then again, who is?

The Angels are being blamed for working him too hard, trying to capitalize on his Homeric bat and arm at the same time. They are blamed by making a bunch of last-minute roster changes that – instead of boosting their chances for a playoff spot – happened to coincide with an August tailspin that, in another sport, would have them relegated to the American Association.

They started the month with seven losses and – as of this writing – are 5-16 in this cruel of months. That’s 11 games underwater, roughly the same margin they are out of playoff spot.

To top it all off, the increasingly fragile Mike Trout is back on the injured list. Two of the greatest players in history and the team can’t even come close to breaking even.

Maybe it’s time to go back to the drawing board. Let go of the stars who win awards so we can get back to a team that wins games.
