A trickle of people crossed from the Gaza Strip into Egypt on Wednesday, perhaps the first of thousands of people with dual citizenship, foreigners and others fleeing the war between Israel and Hamas.

The entry point is the Rafah border crossing. Over 400 people made the trip, mostly foreign nationals but also some severely injured Palestinians.

In other news, UNICEF, the United Nations agency for children reported on Wednesday that – on average – 400 children were killed or injured each day in Gaza.

Israeli air strikes on refugee camps in the Gaza Strip are said to have contributed to the casualties.

Santos survives expulsion vote

GEORGE SANTOS (R-NY).

Rep. George Santos (R-New York) survived the first battle in his efforts to retain his seat in the House of Representatives.

The House voted 179 to expel him and 213 against. A two-thirds vote is required to expel a member.

Santos has been disgraced for lying about his life history and allegedly lying to donors and Congress, among other offenses.

But some House members were unwilling to vote to expel him until the results of his criminal trial and investigation by the House Ethics Committee are available.

Rangers take it all in “wild” finish

The Texas Rangers, a wild card team from American League West, ran the Major League Baseball playoff table and won the World Series on Wednesday by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 in Phoenix and winning their fourth game in the five-game series.

It was the franchise’s first MLB crown in the team’s 63-year history.

The D-backs were a National League West wild card team as well.

KNIGHT DEAD AT 83: Bobby Knight, the controversial but successful basketball coach at Indiana University, has died.

LAKERS VS. CLIPPERS:  The Lakers beat the Clippers 130-125 in overtime on Wednesday night. LeBron James scored 35 points to lead all scorers, Both teams are now 3-2.

HOCKEY: The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 in overtime. The Ducks are now 6-4-0.

Weather: Cooling trend on the way

The forecast for our West Orange County area for Thursday is for sunny skies and a daytime high of 85, with an overnight low of 51. But things take a cloudy and cooler turn for the next few weeks, bringing a more autumnal feeling to our fall.

Friday should be 81 (54), followed by 79 (56) on Saturday and Sunday.
