A battle for the lead in the Garden Grove League boys basketball race is looming this Friday … probably.
Going into Wednesday night’s games, Santiago and Los Amigos are each 3-0 in GGL play. If the Cavaliers beat Loara and the Lobos defeat Bolsa Grande, they’ll meet Friday both with 4-0 records at the LAHS gym in Fountain Valley at the halfway point of the conference schedule.
Going into tonight’s games, Santiago is 10-11 overall but on a three-game winning streak and Los Amigos (13-6) has won four straight.
A similar battle is shaping up in the girls version of the GGL race. This afternoon, Santiago (2-0 in league, 5-13 overall) will host Loara (3-0, 11-8) for the lead.
In the Wave League for boys, Corona del Mar (2-0, 19-3) will visit Marina (2-0, 16-6) for the league lead on Friday.
The Pacifica girls team, with the best overall record in the West Orange County area at 17-4, has struggled (2-2) in the tough Empire League and will host Cypress (10-11, 2-2) Friday in effort to rise in the standings behind Crean Lutheran and Tustin.
The Pacifica boys (15-7, 2-2) are in a similar situation, visiting Cypress (15-5, 3-0) to keep title and playoff hopes alive.
In the Orange League, Western’s boys team lost 72-71 to Savanna to fall into second place. The Pioneers (3-1 in league) will need a win over Magnolia (1-1) to keep pace with the Rebels (4-0).
