Argos advance in CIF-SS soccer

ARGONAUT girls’ soccer team celebrates CIF-SS quarterfinal victory Wednesday over San Marino (GGUSD photo).

Garden Grove High’s girls soccer team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 5 semifinals with a quarterfinal win over San Marino on the Argonaut pitch Wednesday.

The score was 2-2 as the red-and-white prevailed on penalty kicks. Grove (14-3-6) will be at home Saturday against the Campbell Hall Vikings (12-2-2) for a 5 p.m. contest.

Division 1 play saw JSerra defeat Pacifica 1-1, winning on penalty kicks. In Division 4, Monrovia beat Ocean View 2-1.

In CIF-SS girls basketball, Mater Dei defeated Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove 65-47 in Open Division Pool Play.

In Division 4AA quarterfinal action, Newbury Park defeated Pacifica 45-42.

La Quinta’s softball team romped past Magnolia 11-0 in a non-league game Wednesday. Nevaeh Gomez pitched four innings, yielding no hits and striking out eight hitters. At bat, she went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and three runs batted in as the Aztecs opened their 2024 season.

Ella Magga was also 3-for-4, scoring three runs, stealing two bases and driving in two runs. Lynn Luong was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double with three RBIs.

Rancho Alamitos (2-0) beat Magnolia 6-4 in a non-league baseball game.
