Once again an oil sheen has been spotted off the coastline of Huntington Beach.

The spill was first reported at 6:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Authorities were informed of “an unknown substance” in the water about 1.5 miles from the shoreline of Surf City.

Watchstanders at the Los Angeles-Long Beach command  center notified Coast Guard Pollution Responders who brought in state, county and city agencies to investigate the sheen.

At 6:30 a.m. Friday U.S. Coast Guard personnel boarded a Newport Harbor Patrol to investigate while a Coast Guard helicopter conducted an overflight.

Together they discovered an oil sheen about 2.5 miles in length and a half-mile wide floating about 2.8 miles off the shore near oil platforms Emmy and Eva.

As of our deadline, no spill source has been identified. The Coast Guard has hired an oil spill response organization to curb the sheen and remove the oil from the water as well as identify any impacts to wildlife and the environment.

No “oiled” wildlife have been observed, but members of the public are asked not to approach any and instead call the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at 1-877-823-6926.
