Enrollment drop means teacher layoffs for Anaheim schools

Declining enrollment is leading to layoffs among faculty in the Anaheim Union High School District.

At its March 7 meeting, the AUHSD board took action to notify nearly 200 teachers that they may be terminated. although the precise number has not been determined.

“It was a challenging moment for all involved,” said AUHSD Superintendent Michael Matsuda, “and I understand all the emotions that have surfaced.”

The number of teachers given termination notices is expected to be closer to 100 to 110.

According to the district, these changes will be among a group of educators hired on a temporary basis.

Some parents rallied on a march Thursday from Brookhurst Junior High to the AUHSD headquarters to protest the decision.

The AUHSD is a 7-12 system serving most of Anaheim and parts of Buena Park, Cypress and Stanton and is generally located between the Artesia Freeway (State Route 91) and Katella Avenue.
