Two-way baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani on Monday said he has never bet on sports or – intentionally – paid any gambling debts incurred by his interpreter Ippei Mizhura.

Ohtani, who signed a $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after leaving the Los Angeles Angels, said that the Mizhura – a close friend – had lied to him and stole millions of dollars from him.

He made his comments at a press conference at Dodger Stadium, speaking in Japanese from a document. He took no questions from members of the news media.

“I am very saddened and shocked someone whom I trusted has done this,” he said.

Ohtani offered no details about how Mizhura – since fired by the Dodgers and under investigation by the IRS and several law enforcement agencies –  was able to take up to $4.5 million – without he, a business manager or accountant – taking notice.

“To summarize how I am feeling right now, I am just beyond shocked,” Ohtani said

Security Council calls for cease-fire

A resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip was passed Monday by the United Nations Security Council.

The vote was 14 in favor with the United States abstaining because the resolution didn’t condemn Hamas, which started the current conflict by staging raids into Israel and seizing hostages, most of which have not yet been released.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, criticized the U.S for not vetoing the resolution, saying that it “harms both the war effort and the effort to release the hostages.”

Israel refused the order to cease-fire and “will destroy Hamas and continue fighting until every last hostage has come home,” said the Israeli foreign minister.
