Checking up on the league races for area baseball, softball

The rain has lifted (mostly) and area high school baseball and softball is back in action with some teams in tournament play, some in league play and some in both.

There have been some epic clashes. Huntington Beach’s baseball team, ranked 11th in the state lost a 4-3 11-inning marathon to Mater Dei (27th) in the Boras Classic South tournament semifinals.

There have been some blowouts. Pacifica’s softball team – which fell from first to 12th after two losses – hammered Tustin 17-1 in an Empire League contest and Rancho Alamitos ran away with a 19-6 Garden Grove League win over Bolsa Grande. And let’s not forgets La Quinta’s 15-1 victory over Rancho Alamitos.

With all the tournament action, it’s easy to lose track of the various league races, so here’s a quick look at them. Friday’s results are not included. Records are league play only.

Garden Grove League baseball: Los Amigos leads with a 7-1 mark. followed by Rancho Alamitos (6-2). They were scheduled to play Friday.

Garden Grove League softball: Santiago (3-0) is first, with Los Amigos (2-0) in second.

Empire League baseball: Pacifica (4-0) lead the pack, ahead of Cypress (3-1).

Empire League softball: Pacifica (4-0) is chased by Cypress and Kennedy, both 3-1.

Golden West League baseball: Ocean View (4-0) is on top with Katella (2-1) in second.

Golden West League softball: Segerstrom (4-0) leads the chase, but only by a half-game over Garden Grove (3-0).

Sunset-Wave League baseball: Corona del Mar and Marina are deadlocked at 2-1, so far.

Sunset League softball: Los Alamitos (8-0) is in first with Huntington Beach one game back at 7-1.

Sunset-Surf baseball: Huntington Beach (4-1) leads with Fountain Valley (3-2) in second.

Orange League baseball: Anaheim (4-0) is followed by Century (3-0-1).

Orange League softball: Savanna (4-0) leads, followed by Anaheim and Western at 3-1.

Orange Coast League baseball: Costa Mesa (7-1) is followed by Estancia (8-2).

Orange Coast League softball: Costa Mesa (5-1) has the edge over Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana (3-1).

AND KUDOS to … Matt Hansen of Huntington Beach who doubled and tripled and scored twice against Mater Dei … Raellie Faatuga (La Quinta) who hit two home runs in the fourth inning against Rancho Alamitos. Other Aztec stars included Nevaeh Gomez (home run, double, four RBIs batting, along with pitching four no-hit innings with nine strikeouts).
