Sometimes it’s as important to be lucky as it is to be good.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Angels parlayed a great pitching performance by Reid Detmers with an infield error to defeat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 in Anaheim. 

It was their fourth win in five games. At 5-3, they remain in second place in the American League West.

Detmers pitched six innings of one-hit ball, striking out  12 batters. But the Angels still trailed 1-0 until the key sixth inning. With runners on second and third and two out, Anthony Rendon hit a chopper to Boston third baseman Rafael Devers, who fumbled the ball into left field.

With two out the runners were going and Mickey Moniak and Zach Neto raced around to score what proved to be the tying and winning runs.

“We kept putting the pressure on and then we broke through and that’s what it’s about,” Angel manager Ron Washington said. “Rendon hit a ground ball down the third base, had a lot of topspin on it and it got away. And that’s all we needed to do to finish it off.”

The Angels will wrap up the series with the BoSox today (Sunday) with a 1:07 p.m. game. Chase Sileth (0-0) will make the start for the Halos.

Dodgers roll past the Cubs

Yoshinobu Yamamoto squared his record at 1-1 with a strong pitching performance for the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday against the Chicago Cubs in the Windy City.

He struck out eight batters and pitched five three-hit shutout innings as the Blue Crew defeated the home team 4-1.

A three-run fifth inning proved decisive. One run came in on a wild pitch and Max Muncy’s double brought in two runs, one of them scored by Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and has raised his batting average to .294 after a slow start.

The Dodgers (8-3) continue to lead in the National League West. They’ll take on the Cubs again today with Gavin Stone (0-0) making the start for LAD.
