Ward’s bat, Detmers’ arm beat BoSox; Dodgers lose in 10

Taylor Ward helped lead the way as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-0 Friday at Fenway Park and are a half-game out of first in the American League West.

Ward had a two-run home run and drove in another run on a force out, finishing with three RBIs. It was his fourth homer of the season.Three Angels – Anthony Rendon, Nolan Schanuel and Aaron Hicks each had two hits.

On the mound, Reid Detmers (3-0) pitched 6.1 shutout innings, yielding just three hits. He struck out seven Red Sox and walked two. The home team complicated matters with three errors; three of the Angels’ runs were unearned.

Now 7-6 and chasing the Texas Rangers, the Halos will send Griffin Canning to the mound against the Red Sox (7-7) on Saturday.

Dodgers fall to Padres in 10

A slugfest at Chavez Ravine on Friday night ended with the San Diego Padres defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 in 10 innings.

The Blue Crew jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the early innings, but the visitors scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie the score and eventually send it into extra innings.

But the visitors scored the winning run in the top of the 10th on Jackson Merrill’s RBI single.

Shohei Ohtani continued to dine on National League pitching, going 3-for-5, including a solo home run in the first inning. It was his 173rd homer, tying the record for most home runs by a Japanese-born player. He’s now batting .353.

With the loss, the Dodgers are 10-6 and remain atop the National League West two games over the Padres.

Gavin Stone (0-1) will make the start for LAD on Saturday.
