Spurred in part by the drone attack against Israel by Iran, House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday he will push to get funding to provide military support for Israel, Ukraine and American allies in Asia.
Johnson (R-Louisana) has delayed putting the bill to a vote in the House for two months while he tries to cope with the opposition of right-wing opponents in his party who don’t support aid to Ukraine.
It’s believed that if the whole House voted the bill would pass and go to the Senate and then to the White House.
But Johnson might then face a challenge over his position as Speaker by far-fight Republicans such as Marjorie Taylor Green.
Biden says backing for Israel “ironclad”
America’s support for Israel is still “ironclad” President Joe Biden said on Sunday after the U.S. and other nations combined to blunt the attack of missiles and drones against Israel by Iran in retaliation for an Israeli attack on an Iranian complex in Syria.
Of the estimated 300 devices sent by Iran against Israel, as many as 99 percent were knocked out by American, Israeli, French and British air defenses in the area, according to the Israeli military.
“We have intercepted, we have contained,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Together we shall win.”
The sole reported Israeli casualty was a 7-year-old girl who was struck by shrapnel.
