A proposal to add a community barbecue to a summer concert/National Night Out in the Civic Center might seem like a non-controversial item, but not for the Westminster City Council.

The proposal by Councilmembers Amy Phan West and Namquan Nguyen was to serve hot dogs to the first 500 residents to attend the event on Aug. 8.

But Councilmembers Kimberly Ho and Carlos Manzo raised objections including the potential cost of the barbecue – up to $2000 –  whether it was a self-promotion and a possible burden on the city staff to add to the event at this time.

After some discussion, a motion to approve the event didn’t come to a vote, being superseded by a substitute motion by  Manzo (seconded by Ho) to take no action on the item. That motion was approved 3-2 with West and  Nguyen voting no.

The next council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 12 at 6 p.m.
