Accusing the U.S. Supreme Court majority of “extremism,” President Joe Biden on Monday proposed term limits for justices and an “enforceable” ethics code.
He also called on Congress to give approval to a constitutional amendment limiting presidential immunity.
Biden made his proposals in Austin, Texas at the LBJ Presidential Library. Under his plan, the sitting president would appoint a justice every two years to a term of 18 years.
The ethics code he is proposing would require justices to disclose gifts, steer clear of political activity and recuse themselves from cases when they or a spouse have conflicts of interest.
If passed, the justices most likely to be affected are Associate Justices Clarence Thomas (33 years on the court) and Samuel Alito (18) and Chief Justice John Roberts (19).
