The Edison High School football team continued to make history as the Chargers won the CIF 1-A Southern Regional championship with a 34-28 victory over Granite Hills High of El Cajon at Sheue Field.

With that victory, the green-and-gold advanced to the CIF State Championship game on Saturday, hosting Central High of Fresno at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

The Chargers (11-4) displayed a balanced offense with running back Julius Gillick and quarterback Sam Thomson each turning in star performances.
Gillick, a senior running back, rushed for three touchdowns and had 239 all-purpose yards. Thomson, a sophomore quarterback, passed for two scores.

In addition to showing a balanced attack, Coach Jeff Brady’s team showed sportsmanship by taking a knee in the final seconds of the game with the ball on the Eagles’ 1-yard line.

That championship game on Saturday will pit the Chargers against the Grizzlies (12-2). They’ve won seven straight games after dropping two close games and finishing third in the Tri-River League.
