Be Careful What You Wish For Dept.: The idea from the White House about making Canada the 51th state is intriguing. But I think there are a few rough edges to be smoothed off, first.
First off, Canada is not just one political entity. It’s divided into 10 provinces (like states) and three territories (like the Yukon).
Canada, with its socialized medicine and fun-sized military, leans more to the left than the USA does. With the exception of the prairie provinces like Alberta (considered the North-of-the-Border “Texas”) when they turn into states – with two senators from each state – you’ve got a Democratic majority in the Senate for the foreseeable future.
Now, remember also that whatever one side can do, the other side can also. Someday a new “blue” White House will then want to make states out of Puerto Rico, the U.S Virgin Islands – and maybe – American Samoa as well.
Then there’s the issue of Quebec, a French-speaking province of people who don’t even want to be part of Canada, let alone the USA.
And finally, if you still need convincing, watch some telecasts of NFL football for home games of the Buffalo Bills for a frozen finger fiesta. And that’s still south of Canada.
What makes more sense is the Republic of (South) Korea. They love Americans, make better cars than the Japanese, have great BBQ and such an annexation would really cheese off the Chinese.
What more could you ask for from modern-day imperialism?
