Wednesday has been proclaimed as “Liberation Day” by President Donald Trump, the start of “freeing” the United States from reliance on foreign goods.
According to the Associated Press, that’s when Trump says he will impose “reciprocal” tariffs on nations to match what those countries are charging the U.S.
The specific details won’t be made known until Wednesday and will be announced by the president.
Critics argue that tariffs can raise prices to consumers and fuel inflation and make American goods less attractive to overseas consumers.
Wall Street responded by showing declines in the morning and modest increases in the afternoon. The S&P 500 closed up 0.6 percent and the Dow Jones saw an increase of 1 percent. The Nasdaq slipped by 0.1 percent.
Overseas markets showed reversals. Japanese stocks fell 4 percent, Korean stocks 3 percent and in France, the decline was 1.6 percent.
Religious issue before Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday heard arguments on whether a Catholic charity in Wisconsin deserved a tax exemption that had been denied by a state court.
According to The New York Times, the Wisconsin Supreme Court had decided that the charity were “primarily charitable and secular” and therefore not focused on the Catholic faith.
Based on the questions asked by liberal and conservative justices, it appeared – according to The Times – that the court was going to overturn the Wisconsin judgment.
