Florida and California have long been rivals for sunny weather and gorgeous beaches, but the Miami Marlins prevailed Tuesday in an intercostal baseball contest.
The home team edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 at IoanDepot Park, scoring on a RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning by Jesus Sanchez.
The loss – which dropped the Blue Crew to 24-12 – was in spite of a big night by designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who homered and doubled in a run. Freddie Freeman also had a good outing, batting 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Tony Gonsolin pitched five innings for the visitors, yielding four hits and two earned runs. He struck out eight Marlins and walked two.
Despite the loss, the Dodgers remain in first place in the National League West by a half-game over the San Diego Padres, who lost 13-2 to the Yankees.
Back in Anaheim, the Los Angeles Angels rallied with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 8-3 in Anaheim.
Trailing 3-2, the Halos got two home runs – three for the game – to improve their record to 14-20.
Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer in the first to tie the score at 2-all, and in the eighth, Yoan Moncada hit a three-run blast, followed by a solo home run by Jo Adell to close out the inning.
Logan O’Hoppe was 3-for-4, raising his batting average to .294. Taylor Ward batted 2-for-3 with a walk, and raised his to .184.
Tyler Anderson had a solid start, working 6.2 innings and giving up six hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven batters and walking none.
The Halos remain in fifth and last place in the American League West. The Blue Jays are 16-19 and in third in the AL East.
