Mariners outlast Argos at SoFi

On the big stage of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, city and school district rivals Garden Grove and Pacifica slugged it out and gave fans some big-time excitement.

In a back-and-forth game, Mariners prevailed 28-21, winning it on a late score by Ma’kai Brown.

But Garden Grove’s Quentin Pacelli continued to impress, running for three touchdowns, which gives him seven TDs in two games.

The Mariners are now 1-1 while the Argonauts are 0-2. Grove will visit Santa Ana next Thursday, while the M’s will play Northwood of Irvine next Friday.

In a clash of two of Orange County’s top-ranked football teams, Yorba Linda defeated Edison 21-17 on Thursday at Sheue Field on the Huntington Beach High campus.

Edison took a 17-7 lead in the third quarter but the visitors rallied with two touchdown runs by Isaiah Trujillo, the last coming with two minutes to play.

Edison then drove to the Yorba 14-yard-line, but turned the ball over on downs.

The Mustangs are now 2-0 and the Chargers are 1-1.

Also on Thursday night, Westminster (now 1-1) defeated Buena Park (1-) by17-0 and Rancho Alamitos shut out Santiago 38-7.
Rancho is now 1-0 and Santiago is 0-2.

In flag football, Magnolia defeated Glenn 33-6, Fountain Valley bested Garden Grove 39-6 and Bolsa Grande defrosted Pacifica Christian 18-6 on Thursday.
