Here comes league play

RANCHO ALAMITOS and a dozen other area football teams will open league play this week (Tribune photo).

League play starts this week for our West Orange County area high school football teams. So, here is the “second season.” What follows are the league outlooks, so far.

ALPHA LEAGUE
Edison (4-2) won’t be the favorite to win this conference. The Chargers will have to contend with Los Al. League play doesn’t start will later in October. Edison’s next game will be a non-league contest against Summit High (3-1-1) of Fontana on Thursday.

DELTA LEAGUE
Western (4-1) is our lone local in this conference and can be considered the co-favorite with Capistrano Valley (also 4-1). The matter could be settled this Friday when the Pioneers take on the Cougars , also on Friday.

EPISILON LEAGUE
Huntington Beach (4-1) will contend in a tough league with five of six teams finishing their pre-league schedules with winning records. One of those is Laguna Hills (3-2). The Oilers will take on the Hawks on Friday. The favorite now is Crean Lutheran (5-0), but don’t overlook La Habra (4-1).

KAPPA LEAGUE
None of these teams had spectacular starts, so it might be a real dogfight, since all of them start Kappa play at 3-2 or 2-3. Garden Grove (2-3) will open on Friday against Esperanza (2-3). Westminster (2-3) will take on Brea Olinda (2-3) on Friday.

LAMBA LEAGUE
Three teams are crowded at the top with 4-1 marks: Fullerton, Marina and Sunny Hills. The Vikings will take on the Lancers on Thursday.

OMICRON LEAGUE
This looks like a very well-balanced conference with all teams either 2-3 or 3-2. Pacifica (2-3) will open OL play on Friday against University High (2-3) of Irvine. The Mariners have a common opponent; the M’s defeated Garden Grove 28-21 and Uni lost 35-14 to the Argonauts.

SIGMA LEAGUE
Three of the schools in our coverage area: Ocean View (4-1), Rancho Alamitos (3-2) and Los Amigos (3-2). Favored is Calvary Chapel (5-0) of Santa Ana. The Seahawks (4-1) and Lobos (3-2) play on Thursday. On Friday, the Vaqueros (3-2) will play the Estancia Eagles (4-1).

TANGO LEAGUE
This conference has four teams that once played together in the old Garden Grove League. Costa Mesa has the best record at 4-1, followed by La Quinta (3-1-1), Bolsa Grande (2-3), Anaheim (2-3), Loara (1-4) and Santiago (1-4). On Friday, it’s La Quinta vs. Bolsa Grande and Loara vs. Anaheim. On Thursday, Santiago will play Costa Mesa.

As always, matchups, locations, times (usually at 7 p.m.) are subject to change without notice, so check with the host school before heading to the stadium.

Chargers still on top

Despite a loss last week to LaSerna, Edison (4-2) remains on top of our weekly High Five for local high school football teams. As always, the ratings are based on the magical formulas of maxpreps.com.
Also in the High Five are Huntington Beach, Western, Orange and Marina. On the bubble are Pacifica, Westminster and Garden Grove.
