Top workers, pupils honored

Some of the local school system’s best educators and those being educated were honored at Tuesday’s meeting of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

Named at Employees of the Month for October were Susie Smyth , a fourth-grade teacher at Sunnyside Elementary School in Garden Grove and Santiago Galvez, district office receptionist.

Named as “Community Heroes” for their “outstanding compassion, leadership and service during a time of heightened fear and need in the community” were Samantha Avina-Flores, a senior at Garden Grove High School and her mother, Claire Avina-Flores.

Also, a Community Heroes recognition was presented to three from Santiago High School: Nicole Doone (Community Schools coach), Carlos Cruz (boys soccer coach) and Erick Borrayo (girls soccer coach).

Both teams of “heroes” were involved in donation drives of food, water, hygiene products to families affected by increased immigration enforcement.

Also honored were 46 Simon Scholars, economically disadvantaged pupils who will get money, a laptop computer and other forms of assistance through college and beyond. The list will appear in our Saturday edition.

The GGUSD serves all of Garden Grove and parts of Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.
