An ordinance creating new safety rules and regulations for e-bikes and other “motorized wheeled conveyances” received final approval from the Stanton City Council on Tuesday night.
The ordinance, created in response to complaints about riders of electric-powered bicycles – many of them teenagers – engaging in behavior dangerous to themselves and others.
Unlawful operation of such e-bikes listed 21 possible violations, including:
• intentionally swerving or riding around stopped or slowed traffic;
• riding an e-bike without a fastened helmet if you’re under 18 years old;
• intentionally lifting one or more wheels into the air while riding on a public right-of-way, bike lane or bike path;
• attempting to perform any acrobatic trick or stunts;
• operating against the direction of traffic;
• operating faster than 5 miles an hour on a sidewalk or 20 miles an hour on any public street, bike lane, bike path at any speed greater than is reasonable or prudent under the conditions then existing
.
The ordinance was introduced at the council meeting of Oct. 14.
