Argos in 1st; HB wins 10th

Garden Grove High’s baseball team moved into first place in the Orange Coast League race with a 5-2 win over Santa Ana on Friday.

For the Argonauts it was their fifth consecutive win as their OCL record improved to 6-1, a half-game ahead of the Valencia Tigers. Grove is 9-5 overall.

The Argos will be in tournament play for a while, but have two key OCL games on April 14 and 17 against Valencia (9-2 overall).

In Sunset League play, Huntington Beach (9-2-1 over all) slammed Corona del Mar 11-1 to improve to 9-0 in league. The Oilers jumped out to an early 7-l lead and put the game away with four runs in the fifth.

The orange-and-black have now won 10 games in a row. The only team with a chance of catching them is Newport Harbor, second place in the league at 10-2, but with three games against HBHS on April 28, 29 and May 1.

In softball action, Orange won a non-league Friday game against Bolsa Grande 15-2. The Panthers had 12 hits in the game as they improved overall to 9-4.

Bolsa is 10-4 overall and in first place in the Garden Grove League. The Matadors have a key conference games coming up on April 10 and 19 against second place Magnolia (5-5 overall, 3-1 in league).

Pacifica (12-6 overall) defeated Long Beach Poly 13-6 on Thursday. The M’s are 2-1 in the Crestview League and will resume league play against Canyon on Tuesday in a road game. Cypress (13-5 overall) leads the league at 4-1. The Mariners and Centurions will meet on April 14 and 30.
