Trivial Trivia Dept: OK, with the Dodgers running away with the NL West and the Angels buried in last place in the AL West and football still a few weeks away. there’s not much drama in the world of sports.

So let’s try some stuff you may have never heard of, or – perhaps – just forgot about:

• Walter O’Malley, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, didn’t want to move to California initially. He had plans to build a domed stadium – first in American sports history – for the team to replace the aging and cramped Ebbets Field.

But he got into a feud with New York city bigwig Robert Moses, who wanted to locate any new stadium in Flushing Meadows (that’s in the Queens borough of NYC) and have the city build, own and operate it with the Dodgers being a tenant.

O’Malley said, “O’yeah?” and moved the team to Los Angeles, and induced the New York Giants to relocate to San Francisco, moving the rivalry from across town to across the state.

• Anticipating a hard-to-believe upswing in American interest in the British sport of cricket, a group of investors planned to build a $30 million stadium in Irvine’s Great Park. Surprisingly, people with a lick of sense didn’t want to help fund it, snd the proposal was dropped.

• Remember the Anaheim Royals, the NBA team that played in Anaheim’s Honda Center.? That’s because it never happened.

What did happen was the owners of the Sacramento Kings – unhappy with arena (and possibly the size of their market )– toyed with the idea of moving the franchise to Orange County, calling it the Anaheim Royals, a nod to the team’s earlier name – the Cincinnati Royals.

Who later became the Kansas City Kings, and now the Sacto Kings. And if all the cross-county meandering makes your head spin, consider their origin as the Rochester Royals, who won the 1951 NBA title.

Considering the Kings’ current mark of 22-60 (tied for last in the NBA Western Conference) we in the OC may not be missing anything.
