This could be every politician’s dream come true.

The Stanton City Council will meet in a special session on Tuesday to consider whether to cancel the Nov. 3 election for the office of mayor.

That’s because there’s only one candidate: the incumbent and long-serving mayor, David Shawver. Cancelling the mayoral portion of the election won’t affect the voting for the two city council seats on the ballot. however.

It’s possible that the council might vote to decide to hold the mayor’s election anyway, giving write-in voters an opportunity to cast ballots.

Barring that, the council could appoint Shawver to another four-year term and cancel that part of the election.
He was first elected to the city council in 1988 and as mayor in 2006. He has served several terms as mayor and was elected to the mayor’s post without opposition in 2022.

Also on the agenda for Tuesday is a closed session to discuss the price and terms of payment for 40 properties in the Tina-Pacific area.

The council meeting will be held at 5 p.m. at the Stanton City Hall, 7800 Katella Ave.
