As we head into Week Two (plus Week Zero), it’s still too early to get a handle on who will be the strongest contenders among area high school football teams,

The area athletes that stand out the most were heroes last year as well: Star Thomas of Orange and Brady Edmunds of Huntington Beach. But it’s certain that other standouts will soon … stand out.

Among the most interesting matchups this week are Corona del Mar vs. Edison. The Sea Kings are 2-0 and the Chargers “just” 1-1, but they lost to an out-of-state power from Arizona.

There’s one matchup between two 2-0 teams: Pacifica and Canyon of Anaheim Hills. The latter team is playing under a new name: Cobras.

They had to drop their original mascot “Comanches” under a new state law which banned the use of Native American nations for high school athletic teams.

Not sure why the use of that name was offensive – the Comanches were a large tribe who pioneered the use of horses among Native people – but who wants to argue with Sacramento?
