Voters in the Westminster area will be asked to decide on two money matters in the Nov. 3 general election.
Along with electing a mayor and members of the city council and school board, residents will cast ballots to approve an increase in “bed tax” – the transient occupancy tax paid by guests at motels and hotels.
What’s proposed is an increase of the current rate of 8 percent to 12 percent. If approved, it’s estimated to bring in $452,000 annually to the treasury of a city struggling with financial problems.
Approval requires a simple majority to pass; that’s 50 percent plus one.
Additionally, there’s a bond issue to raise $128 million for renovating and improving campuses of the Westminster School District.
Measure B would provide funds to upgrade classrooms and repair and/or replace aging infrastructure such as roofs, plumbing and utilities.
The effect on annual property taxes is $30 per $100,000 of assessed value. At least 55 percent of WSD voters must approve for the bonds to pass.
The WSD is a K-8 district that serves most of Westminster as well as portions of Fountain Valley, Garden Grove and Huntington Beach.
