The hazmat incident at the GKN Aerospace in West Garden Grove over the Memorial Day weekend is long over, but the follow-up continues.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Garden Grove City Council, the adoption of a resolution extending the proclamation of the local emergency related to the chemical tanks at the factory at 12122 Western Ave. will be considered.
The result of the release of vapors of the MMA chemical and the possibility of a major leak or even explosion led to the evacuation of an area affecting about 40,000 people that included parts of not just Garden Grove, but also Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Seal Beach, Stanton and Westminster.
According to the staff report, “although the expected failure of the chemical tanks has been abated, cleanup and remediation efforts continue at the site. Two of the three chemical tanks were completely drained, the failed tank continues its red-tag condition and the assessment and determination of whether the tanks will be removed from the site has not been completed.”
Also on the agenda are:
• a community spotlight and proclamation in recognition of Kiwanis Club of Garden Grove’s 75th anniversary;
• consideration of a request from West Garden Grove Youth Baseball for co-sponsorship of the 2027 Opening Day Parade on Feb. 6, 2027 at a cost of $14,550.
The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.
