Argos, Panthers open league with wins

GARDEN GROVE, Orange, Rancho Alamitos and Edison all won league openers in football Thursday night.

Garden Grove and Orange opened their 2016 league seasons Thursday night with important wins. The Argonauts (4-2 overall) defeated a strong Los Amigos (3-3) team 27-6 to begin their quest for a fifth straight Garden Grove League title. Orange (6-0) meanwhile defeated another previously unbeaten team in Santa Ana (5-1) in a close game by the margin of 31-29.

Garden Grove League

Rancho Alamitos 43, Bolsa Grande 6: With the lopsided win Thursday, the Vaqueros improved their overall record to 4-2. Six players scored touchdowns for RAHS and Blake Culbert threw for three touchdowns and 249 yards. Bolsa (1-5) got its score on a fumble return by Alex Huynh.

Golden West League

Orange 31, Santa Ana 29: The Panthers jumped out to a 24-9 halftime lead and survived a late rally by the Saints to preserve the win. Aaron Murray, Brandon Warren and Luis Correa combined for 194 yards rushing for OHS.

Sunset League

Edison 48, Newport Harbor 6: Led by Griffin O’ Connor’s 236 yards passing and the one-two running punch of Jack Carmichael (111 yards) and Chad Pavlik (102 yards), the Chargers easily handled the Sailors and improved their record to 5-1.
