Andrew Cogliano scored two goals for the Anaheim Ducks in their 2016-17 season opener Thursday at Honda Center but it wasn’t quite enough as the team fell 4-2 to the Dallas Stars.

SportsbriefsCogliano tallied an unassisted goal at 14:09 of the first period to tie the game up at 1-1, then knotted the scored at 2-2 at the 1:01 mark of the third period but the rest of the game was all Dallas.

In goal, John Gibson made 12 saves for the Ducks. Now 0-1, the Orange County team will next be in action Friday on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Garden Grove defeated Santiago 35-14 in a Garden Grove League football contest Thursday night at GGHS. Ruben Mendoza threw for three touchdowns – two to Brandon Coleman – as the Argonauts improved their record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in GGL play. The Cavaliers fell to 1-5 and 0-2.

Mendoza threw for 245 yards for Grove, while Angel Tajimaora had 166 yards passing for the Cavaliers.

Panthers forfeit win over Saints

Orange High voluntarily forfeited its 31-29 win over Santa Ana last week when athletic officials realized the Panthers had used an ineligible player.

According to published reports, the player in question had played that week in a freshman game, as well as the varsity contest. The Panthers are now 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the Golden West League standings.
