EDISON HIGH won the CIF-SS Division 3 football title and the state Division 1 girls’ volleyball crown all on the same night.
It was a banner day for Edison High School athletics, and the collection of banners may not be over year. The football team won the CIF-SS Division 3 title Friday night, defeating La Mirada 44-24 at the Matadore field. The girls’ volleyball team Menlo-Atherton in the three games to win the state Division 1 final at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.
CHARGERS CHARGE TO D-3 TITLE
Under retiring coach Dave White, Edison built a 28-10 halftime lead and went on to the victory for the section title. Blake O’Conner, as usual, was the star for the green-and-gold, passing for 229 yards and rushing for 55 more and a pair of touchdowns. Jack Carmichael added to the Chargers’ balanced attack, rushing for 181 yards and two scores.
But the season and White’s tenure – he’s been at Edison for 42 years – isn’t over. By virtue of the win Friday night, the Chargers (13-1) will advance to the State Regionals, possibly against San Clemente, which won the Division 2 crown Friday with a 45-35 win over Murrieta Valley.
EDISON GIRLS IN A STATE OF GLEE
For the second straight year, Edison made it to the state girls’ volleyball final. This year the team swept aside its opponent 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18 to grab the title. The Chargers were led by Hannah Phair with 13 kills. Cassidy Dennison and Taylor Gray added 10. Lindsay Sparks had 37 assists.
The road to the state finals was winding for Edison (30-6) because the Chargers were knocked out in the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinal round, but qualified for the SoCal regional tournament.
