It was close, it was exciting but ultimately disappointing for fans of Edison High School’s football team. In the CIF SoCal regional 1-A championship game Saturday night at Huntington Beach High, the Chargers fell just short, losing 38-35 to San Clemente.
Brandon Rivers scored on a one-yard run with just 45 seconds to play to give the Tritons (11-3) the win. San Clemente will now advance to the state title game against Del Oro next Saturday at Sacramento State’s field.
The game went back and forth all night, with big plays and big emotions. Trailing 32-21 in the fourth quarter, Edison (12-2) scored on an 80-yard pass and run play from Griffin O’Connor to Shaun Delmonico and then took the lead at 35-32 on a 100-yard return of an intercepted pass for a touchdown by E.J. Ginnis.
Edison finished the season with the Sunset League title, the CIF-SS Division 3 crown and a memorable send-off for coach Dave White. He’s coached for 31 years at EHS, 14 of them as head of the football program.
O’Connor passed for 370 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for a fourth score.
