A MAN suspected of vandalism and assault was arrested late Sunday and his dog fatally shot by Huntington Beach police.

A police officer in Huntington Beach Sunday night fatally shot a dog that attacked other officers, according to reports. The incident began around 11:22 p.m. in the area of the 16000 block of 14th Street in Sunset Beach.

According to the HBPD, several calls were received complaining of a man striking cars and throwing things. Arriving officers found that vandalism had taken place and one man had been assaulted.

Attempts to speak to the suspect were unsuccessful and an effort to arrest the man was interrupted by the man’s dog, which bit one of the officers. Police say the dog remained aggressive and wasn’t deterred by the use of a Taser. The animal was finally shot by an officer and died at the scene.

The officer who had been bit was treated at the scene and then released from a local hospital with minor injuries. The suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon; he has not been indentified. The investigation continues, according to the HBPD.
