You’ve heard about “porch pirates”: people who steal your online purchases off your front step. Huntington Beach police have arrested a suspect in a slightly different crime: robbing mailboxes.

Derrick Trent of Santa Ana was arrested Friday for allegedly breaking into and stealing from mailboxes in The Residences, an upscale apartment complex in the Bella Terra center on Edinger Avenue.

Working from an anonymous tip, police developed information on a possible suspect, and served a search warrant on Trent for his home and vehicles.

A variety of items believed taken in mailroom burglaries at The Residences were seized and Trent was arrested for burglary and possession of burglary tools and booked into the city jail.
