The Huntington Beach Union High School District has identified its 2017-18 Teachers of the Year – Edison High School’s Greg Gardiner and Ocean View High School’s Roger Keating.

Each year, the district honors two outstanding teachers who exemplify dedication, practice effective instruction methods, and have an overall passion for the art of educating students.  Gardiner serves the Edison Chargers as a science teacher instructing an array of courses including Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Special Abilities Cluster (SAC) Science. Gardiner also acts as a Specialist in the Innovation Lab, a space unique to Edison that allows students to learn through Project Based Learning.

“Greg is such a dedicated and caring teacher.  He has gone above and beyond for the students and staff of Edison,” said Principal Jennifer Graves. “Our Innovation Lab would not be what it is today without his dedication and perseverance.   Just three years ago, the Lab was an empty space and now it is thriving area of research and development.”

For over 17 years, Keating has served as a crucial component to the success of the Ocean View Seahawks.  As the school’s Business Academy (BA) Coordinator, Mr. Keating ensures that students gain the skills needed to be successful in life following high school.  When Keating isn’t teaching his courses of Microsoft Skills and Entrepreneurship, he spends his time organizing professional growth opportunities for his students like community service events, public speaking engagements, and fundraising campaigns.

“Roger is an exceptional teacher.  He spends countless hours making sure his students receive the best instruction, feedback, and support necessary to be successful,” Principal, Dr. Courtney Robinson stated.  “He is one of a kind and we all appreciate what he does for our school and our students.”

Later this year, Gardiner and Keating will be honored among fellow educators at the 2018 Orange County Teacher of the Year Ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
