Orangewood, HB advance in playoffs

SIX of nine local prep basketball teams won Tuesday night, including two of four girls teams.

HUNTINGTON BEACH High and Orangewood Academy each won first round games in the regional playoffs.

Two local prep basketball teams won opening round contests in state playoffs on Wednesday.

Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Regional Division II girls’ basketball playoffs with a 44-25 win over Carson High on Wednesday.

Carolina Montes led the Spartans (20-9) with 17 points. Orangewood, which is seeded first in the playoffs, will be hosting Canyon High of Canyon Country on Saturday. The Cowboys (18-11) defeated Bishop Montgomery 56-50. They are ranked eighth in the bracket.

Huntington Beach High (24-9) defeated Poway 52-43 and will travel to Santa Ana on Saturday to take on Mater Dei (24-9) in another Division II contest. Frankie Wade-Sanchez scored 24 points to lead the Oilers. The Monarchs defeated Eagle Rock 75-33.
