The Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Angels went in different directions on Wednesday. The Ducks lost the first game of their second round Stanley Cup playoff series, falling 5-3 to the Edmonton Oilers. The Angels, on the other hand, defeated the Oakland A’s 8-5 and moved into second place in the American League West standings.
In the Ducks game at Honda Center, the home team trailed 3-1 but rallied to tie it. But Edmonton then settled the matter with two scores that gave them a 1-0 lead in the series. For Anaheim, it was their first loss in regulation time since March 30.
Scoring for the Ducks were Ryan Getzlaf, Patrick Eaves and Jakob Silfverberg. John Gibson had 27 saves in goal.
The series will continue on Friday at Honda Center.
The Angels’ win was their third straight and fourth in their last five games. Matt Shoemaker (1-1) had a decent start, working five innings and giving up seven hits and two runs, striking out six and walking two.
A four-run seventh inning broke open a 4-3 contest and the Halos hung on for the win. Cameron Maybin had three hits and drove in three runs. Kole Calhoun also had three.
The victory improved the Angels’ record to 11-12 and a .478 winning percentage, which allowed them to leapfrog the A’s (10-11, .476) into second. Ricky Nolasco (1-2) will make the start for the Angels on Thursday
