TGIF: Time for cute ducks, ugly aliens

A XENOMORPH in the new sci-fi film “Alien: Covenant,” out this weekend.

Ducks and danger will highlight this weekend’s entertainment. Here’s what’s fun in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.

MOVIES

Films opening at local cinemas:

  • “Alien: Covenant.” Latest in the series of “Alien” movies, but really a prequel to the famous one. Ugly critters versus frightened but feisty humans. Rated R. Starring Michael Fassbender and Katherine Waterston. Ridley Scott directs.
  • “Everything, Everything.” A girl who’s allergic to almost everything finds the courage to venture outside. Starring Amandia Stenberg and Nick Robinson. Rated PG-13.
  • “Diary of Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.” Middle-school nerd goes on a road trip with his parents. Rated PG-13.

ON STAGE

“Murder on the High C’s” is at the Rose Center Theater in Westminster this weekend Thursday through Sunday. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays to Saturdays and Sunday at 2 p.m.

EVENTS

The 25th annual AltaMed Huntington Beach Community Clinic Duck-A-Thon will be held Friday through Sunday at the city pier. Wine tasting is planned from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, with a vendor festival (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and the launching of over 4,000 plastic baby ducklings (3 p.m.) on Saturday. Events on Sunday will see the corporate duck race (1 p.m.) and another day of the vendor festival (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
