ID of attempt murder suspect is revealed

The identity of the suspect arrested in the assault of a woman in Garden Grove on Sunday was revealed Wednesday by police.


According to Sgt. Ray Bex of the GGPD, the suspect is Michael Varela, 30, of Garden Grove. He is being held at Orange County Jail in Santa Ana in lieu of $1 million bail and will be in court on Sept. 29 to face a charge of attempted murder.

The incident was reported at 5:15 a.m. in the 13400 block of Balos Drive, which is east of Beach Boulevard and north of Trask Avenue.

Arriving officers found the woman lying in the street. She was taken to a local hospital with what were described as “significant injuries” believed to be related to the assault. The victim was identified only as a 68-year-old woman. She’s in critical condition, according to Sgt. Bex.

The suspect was arrested that afternoon.
