“Bell” battle isn’t just a football game

EDISON quarterback Griffin O’Connor sets up to pass in the “Battle of the Bell” Friday at LeBard Stadium (OC Tribune photos by Dave Simpson).

Friday’s “Battle of the Bell” game between Edison High School and Fountain Valley High School was more than just a football game between two good high school football teams.

NICK WELCH threw for two TD passes for Fountain Valley.

It’s an annual event that brings out a big crowd each year to LeBard Stadium on the Orange Coast College campus in Costa Mesa. The schools have many activities in the run-up to the game, and school spirit is definitely on display.

Edison won the game 51-14 and now leads the series 34-14-1 in one of Orange County’s most famed rivalries, but regardless of the outcome, the contest continues to show high school football at its best and most exciting.

Orange County Tribune contributing photographer Dave Simpson was there and we are proud to share with you his visual account of the big game. Featured photo on home page shows Fountain Valley (#12) Kishaun Sykes pushes past Edison (#88)Parker Thomas in game action.
