Pacifica grabbed a share of the Empire League football title with its 14-0 upset of Valencia Friday night. The Mariners and Tigers tied for first with 4-1 records. The M’s finish the regular season with an overall 9-1 mark.
PHS quarterback Ben Jefferson threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the West Garden Grove team won its first varsity football title since 2007.
Pacifica will likely enter the CIF-SS Division 10 playoffs next week as the number one team from the Empire, based on its win over Valencia. That also means a home game for the first round.
Cypress and Tustin tied for third in the EL with 3-2 marks after the Tillers knocked off the Centurions 39-20.
In the Golden West League, Santa Ana dashed any hopes of Westminster for a title tie as the Saints defeated Segerstrom 35-14 to finish 5-0 in league. The Lions are in second at 4-1 (8-2 overall) with a 48-21 win over last place Loara.
Orange took third place with a 22-14 victory over Ocean View. The Panthers are 3-2 in league and 8-2 overall. The Seahawks fell to 1-4 in league – good for fifth place – and 5-5 overall.
Garden Grove High won the Garden Grove League title outright Friday with a 39-6 win over Bolsa Grande. It was the Argonauts’ sixth straight GGL football title, and its last, at least for a while. Grove moves to the Golden West League in 2018. The Argonauts finished the regular season 6-3 overall and 5-0 in league.
La Quinta (4-1, 9-1) took second with its 48-15 win over Los Amigos (1-4, 2-8). Bolsa finished sixth at 0-5 and 1-9.
In the Sunset League, Edison (4-1, 7-3) finished second after its 51-7 win over Marina, and Huntington Beach (2-3, 3-7) tied for third despite a 21-7 loss to Newport Harbor. Marina tumbled into last with the loss, finishing 0-5 in league and 3-7 overall. Los Alamitos has the title with a 5-0 mark, 7-3 overall.
CIF-SS brackets for the playoffs will be posted starting Sunday morning. The Tribune will publish the pairings as they become available.
