Edison, Newport on track; Argos roll on

HIGH SCHOOL basketball results for Wednesday for the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.

It might be a little early to say this, but the Sunset League boys’ basketball race could be settled on Friday. After big wins on Wednesday, Edison (12-5 overall and 2-0 in league) and Newport Harbor (14-4, 2-0) are on a collision course at the Charger gym.

Led by Spencer Serven’s 20 points, Edison rolled over Los Alamitos 48-32 while the Sailors defeated Fountain Valley 56-39. The top scoring performance Wednesday among teams in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area was by Marina’s Jakob Alamudun, who had 31 points in the Vikings’ 76-60 win over Huntington Beach.

In the Garden Grove League, Garden Grove High’s Argonauts rolled to their 12th straight win in defeating La Quinta 68-45 in the Aztec gym. The Argos (17-1) are ranked number one in CIF-SS Division 5-AAA. Eddie Castenada scored 15 points for the red-and-white in besting LQ (11-5 overall) in the GGL opener for both teams.

The Golden West League is loaded with contenders this year, and in a clash of two of them at Loara High, the Saxons defeated the Orange High Panthers 63-44. In other GWL action, Ocean View and Westminster also posted opening night wins.
