Edison win sets up Monday showdown

EDISON’S boys’ basketball team won on Friday to set up a key game Monday.

Edison and Newport Harbor each won Sunset League boys’ basketball games on Friday, setting up a showdown on Monday for what could be the league title.

The Chargers defeated Marina 43-36 to improve their Sunset record to 6-0 and 18-5 overall. The Sailors (5-1 and 18-5) are hot on their tails and the two will clash on Monday in the Newport gym for a rematch of the Jan. 12 game won by Edison 59-48.

On Friday, Spencer Serven scored 16 points to lead the Chargers. Marina (2-4, 12-10) got 14 points from Jakob Alamudun.

In the Garden Grove League, Garden Grove High held off its closest league rival in defeating La Quinta 64-46, led by Sebastian Castro’s 22 points and 19 more by Alexis Ortega, the Argonauts won their 17th straight game and improved overall to 22-1, 6-0 in league.

La Quinta (15-7, 4-2) was led by Michael Nadeau with 15 points.

Ocean View opened its lead in the Golden West League to two games with its 66-59 win over Segerstrom, in a second place tie. The Seahawks are 6-0 in league and 19-4 overall, compared to the Jaguars’ mark of 4-2 and 13-8. Westminster (4-2, 11-11) is tied for second.

Mekhel Harvey scored 23 points for OVHS.
