It’s not the league title yet, but you can see it from here.
With ace pitcher Nathan Alcaron dominating on the mound, the Rancho Alamitos Vaqueros took over undisputed possession of first place in the Garden Grove League baseball race with a 6-1 win over La Quinta at Dave Demarest Field on Tuesday.
The win improved Rancho’s GGL record to 9-1 (16-3 overall) while the Aztecs went to 8-2 (13-8). But don’t go ordering the trophies yet; the rubber match is Friday at the Vaq diamond. It’s likely La Quinta’s last chance to defend the GGL crown shared last year with Garden Grove High.
The green-and-gold started fast, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as Alberto Rodriguez drove in a pair, doubling with the bases loaded off Aztec starter Alexan Rostomian. As it turned out, that was all Rancho would need.
Alcaron kept the blue-and-gold hitless until two out in the bottom of the fourth. La Quinta mounted a challenge and put two batters on base, but the next hitter popped out.
The Aztecs finally got on the scoreboard when Tyler Lay doubled and the scored two batters later to make it 2-1. That would be as close as La Quinta would get.
Rancho added four runs in the top of the sixth in a rally sparked by Cardenas’ triple to deep center field and although the Aztecs were able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh – which lead to Coach Greg Pines replacing Alcaron with Andy Pham on the mound – it ended up with the visitors walking off the field with the inside track to a league title.
