Nguyen, state Senate honor surfing

STATE SEN. Janet Nguyen presents proclamation of California Surfing Day.

State Sen. Janet Nguyen (R-34) authored and presented a Senate resolution declaring Sept. 20, 2018 as California Surfing Day.

The presentation was made on the Senate floor in Sacramento to a delegation of surfing enthusiasts from Huntington Beach, including HB Mayor Mike Posey, surfing legends Jericho Poppler and Paul Strauch, and Dean Terrence of the Jan and Dean singing group who recording “Surf City” – a song about Huntington Beach – in 1963.

Huntington Beach is the home of the U.S. Open of Surfing, the International surf Museum and the Surfing Walk of Fame.

HB resident named to all-conference team

Marlies de Jong of Huntington Beach has been named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team in rowing. She rows for Worchester Polytechnic University, which is a member of the New England Women and Men’s Athletic Conference.

To qualify, de Long had to earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and be a member of the varsity team for an entire season.

New principals named for the OVSD

Four new principals have been approved for 2018-19 in the Ocean View School District.

They are Elaine Burney (College View Elementary), Lori Florgan (Golden View Elementary), Joy Harris (Harbour View) and Jennifer Landero (Spring View Middle School).

The OVSD is a K-8 district serving northern Huntington Beach and portions of Fountain Valley, Westminster and Midway City.

GG residents initiated into society

Two local residents have been initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, a collegiate honor society.

The initiates are Jessica Nguyen of Garden Grove at the University of the Pacific and Tu Pham of Garden Grove at California State University, Dominguez Hills. There are approximately 30,000 members nationwide. The society was established in 1897.
