Digital advertising sign approved, 3-2

ARTISTS’ RENDERING of the front and back of one of the panels of the digital billboard proposed for Westminster.

A split Westminster Planning Commission approved a request Wednesday night for a variance and conditional use permit to install a 64-foot high digital billboard.

Three members of the commission – Tony Bui, Andrew Nguyen and Quynh-Giao Nguyen – voted in favor, with two –Carlos Manzo and Anita Rice – opposed.

The project had been continued from the May 2 meeting of the panel. Electra Media Inc. is proposing to erect the advertising device at 13071 Springdale St., facing the Garden Grove (22) Freeway adjacent to the Westminster Rinks ice hockey facility.

The sign would be 64 feet above grade; the height maximum now is 35 feet. It would operate from 5 a.m. to midnight daily.

In connection with this, EMI is proposing to remove the abandoned Sunset Ford sign along the freeway at 6312 Garden Grove Blvd.

Further, the applicant proposes to share a portion of the revenue from the proposed billboard with the city.
