Neighbors battle suspects in burglary

A BURGLARY suspect was arrested Friday morning in Garden Grove.

One suspect is in custody and two others are being sought for a residential burglary in Garden Grove Friday morning that was interrupted by neighbors.

According to Lt. Carl Whitney of the GGPD, the incident took place around 11:30 a.m. in the area of Rosita Place and La Bonita Avenue, north of Westminster Avenue and east of Euclid Street.

Arrested was Chantha Van 36, a resident of Long Beach. Still at large are a male Asian in his late 20s to early 30s and the driver of the suspect vehicle, for which no description was available.

Arriving officers saw neighbors holding a suspect down on the ground, and arrested the man. Police say two men had burglarized a home in the 13800 block of La Bonita, smashing a sliding grass window and ransacking the house.

A home alarm sent the two fleeing out of the building, but the homeowner saw two suspects holding stolen property and confronted them. Armed with a handgun, he tried to detain the suspects but they attacked him, according to Lt. Whitney.

During the struggle, the gun discharged and the two suspects fled. One of them was tackled by a neighbor and was held down until police arrived. The second suspect ran to a black Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicle bearing paper dealer license plates.

A third suspect drove the two of them away. The homeowner told police he thought he had shot a suspect but a canvass of local hospitals found that no gunshot victims had been admitted.

Van was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and was admitted for observation for unrelated health issues.
