A ceremony for the dedication of a street sign honoring an Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy killed in what is now Huntington Beach 78 years ago will be held on Monday on Pacific Coast Highway at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

The ceremony and sign will honor the memory of Ezra Stanley, 50, who was killed on Nov. 19, 1940 when his patrol car was struck from behind by a car driven by a Huntington Beach café owner. The patrol car crashed into a post along the highway, which punctured the gasoline tank, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.

Stanley succumbed to his injuries. His partner, Carl Pryor, was hospitalized but was able to recover. The motorist who struck the patrol car was arrested by Huntington Beach police for negligent homicide, DUI and being drunk in public.

The event will commence at 11 a.m. and will feature comments by Mayor Mike Posey and Sheriff-Elect Don Barnes.
